Every year it seems as though Christmas creeps into the stores earlier and earlier. Halloween is barely cold before the first signs of Christmas lights and trees began to emerge. Then there is the holiday music blasting in supermarkets that really makes you wonder is it November or December? Lastly, Netflix and Lifetime begin flooding our televisions with Christmas movies.
The question I wonder is, Is it too early to watch Christmas movies? Or even to get into the Christmas/holiday mood?
This is the time of year when we should be celebrating togetherness. Not every country celebrates Thanksgiving, but alas it is a holiday in the United States and it should have its own moment. Without stores pushing Christmas tree sales, or displaying ornaments.
November is such a short time for us to get used to the idea of even having a Thanksgiving. We should embrace it as much as we can before the day after Thanksgiving happens. You know, when the real greed and craziness begins.
Some of us even begin decorating for Christmas the day after Thanksgiving. A family tradition of tree hunting, and then decorating together.
Why do stores and society do this to us during the holidays?
Networks begin showing movies before Halloween even ends, and Thanksgiving even starts. I wonder if it is to get us in the mood to do some shopping? Or perhaps pump us up for the holidays?
The obvious answer is creating demand.
Perhaps the movies just are a way to get us feeling good, and thinking lovely thoughts. After all, for most of us, the holidays are full of happiness and love. And let’s face it after 2020 we have little to look forward to, especially with the looming threat of another pandemic shutdown hanging around.
While I do not agree with stores pushing products on us, along with pressure to purchase items for our loved ones otherwise we will fail Christmas, I don’t think that holiday movies are too soon.
Most of them are just based during the holiday season, but unless you turn off the Hallmark/Lifetime Channel then it is more about falling in love and finding that love of your life during the most magical time of the year. How can you not love a message like that?
