Starting a garden can seem pretty intimidating, especially when you are a self-proclaimed black thumb plant killer. However, I feel with enough determination and the will to learn new things you too can create your own Herb Garden. If you are an avid reader of thoughtsfromafrenchgirl.com, you know I do not have the backyard or space for a garden. So I created my own herb garden in my kitchen. Some of you may be a little nervous about starting a garden but trust me these gardening tips will get you to success!
Now, as I mentioned above, if you are a little hesitant and or you decided to start planting on a whim then baby plants are your way to go. If you are into the seasons, say Spring then I would use seeds. Planting your seeds around April will give you a lovely garden. You can use all of my tips for either garden, so pull on those gloves and let’s get dirty. (or no gloves it is up to you, I didn’t use any.)
Here are a few easy-to-follow tips to help you on your way. Keep scrolling as I plant each sweet herb. Today I am planting basil and coriander. Let’s get planting…
1. Find the perfect pot for your project
Selecting the right pot doesn’t mean you can’t use something that is visually pleasing as well as functional. Just be sure where ever you decide to place your baby garden there is plenty of sunshine. You could choose a window box, or as I did a spot near the window inside my apartment. Making sure your plants get the sunshine they need ensures they will flourish!
2. Prepare the soil.
Whether you’re growing herbs in individual pots or planting them in the ground, be sure to properly prepare the soil beforehand. Some people will either put rocks or broken bits on the bottom of the planter so the plant is able to breathe. Here I am cutting up a plastic bag and lining the bottom of my planter. Once the plastic is laid on the bottom I then fill in the planter with a bit of soil. Here is where I really prepare my soil by moistening it. This is an important step and should not be skipped. I then start to put the plants into the dirt.
This part is loads of fun! I do love picking out seeds and I can’t wait to do that next spring when expanding my garden. Choose the herbs you will use. Ones that you love and will never neglect. I find that I care more, and seem to forget less when I am looking after herbs that I really love. store. I tend to gravitate towards rosemary, basil, thyme, coriander, and chives. These I often use in my cooking, and with rosemary and thyme, I seem to go bananas with those during the holidays. Once you have selected your plants then make sure that you water them or check to see if they need watering. I tend to wait a day before I pop them into their new pot. Make sure you also read the back of the label either on the packet or the tag sticking in the dirt to see how much dirt you need to use, how much watering the plant will need, and of course the tag is there until you create your own little signs, so you never forget what you have!
4. Cover them with dirt
Once you have taken the plants out of their pots place them in the moistened dirt. Then fill the dirt up and over the rim of the dirt surrounding the plant. You want to put the dirt in so it reaches the bottom of the plants. Don’t be afraid of getting your hands dirty, it is quite therapeutic.
The final but not the last step. You will repeat this step for the life of the plant! Once you have filled the dirt in, you will want to add water. Add the water slowly, otherwise, it will just flow to the bottom and the plant won’t have time to absorb anything. I usually pour counting to five quickly, waiting a few seconds by counting to five again and then pouring in more water. You will want. to keep your soil nice and moist so your herbs will continue to grow. Remember to give your plants lots of sunlight, and check them regularly so the soil doesn’t dry out.
